Retreat to the Ensuite

In Hoboken, NJ, a bedroom renovation. Two hardworking professionals with three young boys needed a little more peace and tranquility in their lives. Working under the design guidance of Shamika Lynch of Maximizing Tiny we delivered a space that offers the couple strong luxury hotel vibes every time they finish a long day of work and caring for their family. The expanded master closet provided storage but the design details provided elan.

We didn’t want to close the room off from the natural light provided by the window which is now enclosed in the closet. With exterior windows on two sides of the building, the room benefits from sunlight coming from different directions over the course of the day. So Shamika and I created a transom window above the bed to allow sunlight to flow through from either side of the wall. Another brainstorm of ours, dreamed up on site, was the curved closet wall. Partly its intention was to visually shorten what was already a long hallway, to which we were adding another five feet of length. Its refined elegance may feel contemporary, leaning into the transitional/modern feel of the room. However it also has a strong historical precedent in the beautiful brownstones of Hoboken, one of which this family calls home. Walking into the bedroom now, as the graceful curve of the wall eases them into the space, we hope the clients feels themselves eased into a restful state of comfort.
